Creating A New Paradigm for Shelter

Friday, September 28, 2007- Benefit Dinner

Three areas of our lives have no equal in terms of our daily survival and healthy evolution. Most of us are becoming more conscious about the food we eat and the water we drink, but until very recently, few have given much thought to the importance of shelter. As its primary mission, Habitat For Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. We all share that vision and celebrate their extraordinary achievements - we can do even more!

Part of the body of knowledge we all know as feng shui holds enormous potential in making a significant contribution to Habitat's goal - both in real dollars, because of our commitment to make the world a better place, and in the currency of our practical understanding of healthy building practices. What would our future be like if Habitat's vision to create a "decent shelter" included such things as an understanding of wise color choices for happiness, proper placement of doorways and stairs for prosperity and conscious alignment of beds and kitchen appliances for optimum health?

Join us for an evening of shared commitment, wonderful entertainment and a unified intention to make a difference in the world where human beings, nature and the homes we build converge in the spirit of heartfelt service.

About William Spear

Fortunate Blessings Foundation president William Spear is a recognized authority on health and environmental issues, feng shui, natural architecture and community planning. His own approach to vital design, Intuitive Feng Shui®, is presented in his bestselling book, Feng Shui Made Easy: Designing Your Life With the Ancient Art of Placement (HarperCollins, 1995), which has been translated into eleven languages and was hailed by the New York Times as "the most user-friendly explanation of feng shui for American audiences."
The Fortunate Blessings Foundation presents lectures and courses taught internationally by Mr. Spear for architects, interior designers, urban planners and concerned citizens. The focus of these activities is innovative community and home design that balances maximum well-being of inhabitants with minimum environmental impact. It is our belief that a sustainably designed structure should aid its dwellers in integrating their inner and outer realities; to this end, we support stress-reducing interior design and landscaping, energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies, and, ultimately, sustainable economics, organic agriculture, and ecological conservation. The Foundation is particularly interested in innovative design for schools, hospitals and nursing homes, parks and playgrounds, libraries, homeless shelters and urban planning projects.
Since 1983, we have also undertaken a variety of studies on the effect of the environment on health and the relationship of diet to disease; care and support of patients dying of cancer and AIDS; care and support of nuclear-accident survivors, especially children, in Chelyabinsk, Ukraine; and care and support of people affected by the wars in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. We conducted whole-foods cooking classes for refugees in Croatia and victims of radiation poisoning in Chelyabinsk, to show how nutritional fortification could help reduce the negative effects of radioactive fallout and exposure to the conditions of war. In 1993, our sister organization in Zagreb, the Society for the Improvement of the Quality of Life, was awarded the "Green Oscar" - the Earth Day International Award - at the United Nations for its work in environmental protection during the Bosnian war.
