Jason Kliwinski, AIA, LEED AP
Jason has dedicated himself to creating sustainable communities through education
and leadership by example. Jason obtained a Bachelor of Architecture from NJIT
in 1994. While there, he designed and successfully petitioned the NJIT, SOA for
sustainable design studios and classes, which has flourished into a master's certificate
in sustainable design. Upon graduation, Jason joined Cornucopia Network of NJ,
Newark Environmental Coalition, and Friends of the Passaic River to continue his
educational outreach. He obtained his LEED accreditation in 2003, and architectural
license in 2002. Having designed over 8 educational facility projects and several
private homes to the LEED Silver standards in New Jersey, Jason is versed in incorporating
the NJ Clean Energy and NJ Smart Start programs. Some features include high efficiency
mechanical systems, over 300KW of photovoltaics, daylighting, and improved building
envelop. Jason's projects have saved as much as 50% in energy within conventional
budgets. Jason helped found the USGBC-NJ chapter in 2003. Currently, he is a faculty
member on their Speakers Bureau. Jason is also the Chair of the AIA-NJ Committee
on the Environment and 1st Vice President. Working through these two organizations,
Jason has continued his sustainable education mission while leading by example
in his profession.
Bio: Jason
is currently the Director of Sustainable Design with the Spiezle Group in Trenton,
New Jersey. Jason has serves as First Vice President of the AIA-NJ and Chair of
AIA-NJ the Committee on the Environment (COTE) for the last two years. In these
roles, Jason has organized many educational evenst, providing valuable sustainable
design information for AIA-NJ's members as well as the general public. Mr. Kliwinski
is a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, School of Architect,
a registered Architect in New Jersey, and a LEED Accredited Professional. As
a sustainable design/LEED™ specialist, Jason was responsible for the design and
construction of the first LEED certifiable public schools in New Jersey and 8
major LEED registered projects since. Having spent much of his formal education
and career focusing on sustainable design, Jason is a firm believer that it does
not cost more to build green. To this end, his involvement in co-founding the
USGBC NJ, working with NJHEPS & AIA-NJ has allowed Jason to continue educationing
Architects, Owners, and occupants about the social, environmental and economic
benefits of building green while cost effectively incorporating environmentally
responsible design into projects everyday. Statement: AIA-NJ
has a primary role in promoting and creating sustainable communities in one of
the most densely populated and environmentally diverse states in the country.
Striking the balance between economics, environmental stewardship, and energy
efficiency in a world where Green House Gas Emission reduction has become the
mantra will continue to be in the forefront of conversations and design issues.
Architects are leading this conversation. AIA-NJ and the Committee on the Environment,
along with AIA National can provide the resources and tools to our members and
the community to address the environmental, social, and economic concerns affecting
the built and natural environment today.
