William Spear

Fortunate Blessings Foundation president William Spear is a recognized educator, consultant and author on health and environmental issues, integrative medicine, sustainable design, feng shui, the I Ching, human potential, End-of-Life care, and a leader of trauma relief efforts. His approach to vital design, Intuitive Feng Shui®, is presented in his bestselling book, Feng Shui Made Easy: Designing Your Life With the Ancient Art of Placement (HarperCollins, 1995), which has been translated into eleven languages and was hailed by the New York Times as "the most user-friendly explanation of feng shui for American audiences."

The Fortunate Blessings Foundation presents lectures and courses taught internationally by Spear for architects, interior designers, urban planners and concerned citizens. The focus of these activities is innovative community and home design that balances maximum well-being of inhabitants with minimum environmental impact. It isSpear's belief that a sustainably designed structure should aid its occupants integrate their inner and outer realities; to this end, the Foundation supports stress-reducing interior design and landscaping, energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies, and, ultimately, sustainable economics, organic agriculture, and ecological conservation. The Foundation is particularly interested in innovative design for schools, hospitals and nursing homes, parks and playgrounds, libraries, homeless shelters and urban planning projects.

Since 1983, the Foundation has also undertaken a variety of studies on the effect of the environment on health and the relationship of diet to disease; care and support of patients dying of cancer and AIDS; care and support of nuclear-accident survivors, especially children, in Chelyabinsk, Ukraine; and care and support of people affected by the wars in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. The Foundation conducted whole-foods cooking classes for refugees in Croatia and victims of radiation poisoning in Chelyabinsk, to show how nutritional fortification could help reduce the negative effects of radioactive fallout and exposure to the conditions of war.

More Recently, the Foundation's relief programs in 2005 and 2006 actively addressed the material needs (such as the Alley Camp "Sleep Tight" mattress appeal) and severe Post-Traumatic Stress issues of thousands of citizens in Sri Lanka following the December 2004 tsunami disaster and, then, in Java after the July 2006 earthquake in Indonesia. In both countries the primary focus of our relief teams was to help traumatized and often orphaned children by working directly with them and by training their care-givers, mental and healthcare providers to help children recover from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress.
